Manchester United recently lifted the Europa League trophy and by doing so they sealed a spot in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions league. The man of the match winner and prospective heir to the Manchester United's captaincy Ander Herrera has surprisingly emerged as a target for Spanish giants Barcelona.
The Europa League winners are willing to hold on to Herrera in the coming season(s) and have since laughed off suggestions of a possible sale. The 27 year old who has had his career rejuvenated under Jose Mourinho was instrumental for Manchester United as they managed two major trophies (The Capital One Cup and the Europa League) this season.
Herrera's man-marking job on Eden Hazard in United's 2-0 victory over Chelsea in March was hailed as the one of the best individual performances of the campaign.
Barcelona plan to name Ernesto Valverde as Barcelona's new manager after the Copa Del Rey finals against Alaves. Valverde worked with Herrera for one year at Athletic Bilbao before his move to Old Trafford in 2014, Valverde has already asked Robert Fernandez for the midfielder as he looks to refresh the squad being left over by Luis Enrique.
It is widely believed Barcelona have a lot to do if they entertain any hope to catch up with Real Madrid in terms of squad depth, Barcelonas back up players (Arda Turan, Paco Alacer, Andre Gomes etc) didn't find the rhythm of their Madrid counterparts (Alvaro Morata, Isco and Marcos Asensio).
Ander Herrera would provide fist team competition for Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta in the heart of Barcelona's midfield but any deal involving a move to Barcelona for Herrera appears highly unlikely at the moment. Jose Mourinho trusts in the Spaniard and would have Manchester United discuss a new contract rather than sell the 27 year old.
