Huddersfield Are In The Premier League
Huddersfield Town needed a penalty shootout to overcome Reading in Monday's playoff final in Wembley. A goalless stalemate had seen the games go to extra time and then penalties. Christopher Schindler had the telling kick for Huddersfield as they celebrate their first top flight promotion since 1972, their very first in Premier League era.
In a game where chances were few and far between Huddersfield missed the clearest chance of the game early on when defender Michael Hefele headed off target from an Aaron Mooy free kick before Brown's miss in the ninth minute. Reading finished third with 85 points in the regular season, four points and two places above Huddersfield.
Huddersfield reportedly have one of the lowest finances in the Championship but have found a way to come up with the Elites of English football after a long absence, the result means Huddersfield Town have now won four play-off finals, three of those victories coming via penalty shootouts.
The Terriers are not known for high scoring in their games and despite having 25 wins out of 46 games they still finished the Championship campaign with a negative goal difference. History is not on the side of Huddersfield as the last three Championship play-off winners have been relegated at their first attempt.
The 4-3 victory on penalties completed a turnaround for The Terriers after finishing 19th in the Championship just 12 months ago, meanwhile Reading themselves will have to reflect on a fourth play off final defeat.
