Messi's Four-Game FIFA Ban Lifted After Appeal
Lionel Messi has succeeded in his appeal against a four-game ban that was handed to him after verbally abusing a match official. The Argentine Football Association actually appealed on behalf of their 'star boy' and the 29 year old's suspension has been rescinded. Messi is now eligible to play in the remaining 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
The offence took place in the 1-0 victory against Chile and the Barcelona attacker has since missed a game through the ban in Argentina's 2-0 loss to Bolivia. FIFA announced on Friday that the ban had been lifted as the "evidence available was not sufficient to establish" an infringement that required retrospective action to be taken.
A FIFA Statement read "The Fifa appeal committee has upheld the appeal lodged by the Argentinean Football Association on behalf of the player Lionel Messi, against the decision taken by the FIFA disciplinary committee, lifting the sanctions imposed on him as a result."
Argentina are in danger of missing out on the World Cup in 2018 due to poor showings in the qualifiers.
