The Gabonese misfired continually as Dortmund lost 1-0 to Benfica in Portugal.
Borrussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel has hit out at striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang following their 1-0 loss to Benfica in the first leg of their Champions league round of 16 tie. The Gabonese missed two clear chances and then went on to fire a penalty straight at the opposition keeper.
Tuchel took the striker out of his misery when Aubameyang was then replaced by Andre Schurrle in the 62nd minute.
Talking about why he removed Aubameyang, "Aubameyang is not fully fit after the African Nations Cup. His body language did not suggest that he will do better after giving away the penalty."
Tuchel spoke positively after the game, expressing hope for the second leg and a possibility of progression.
"I dont think we played well, I think we played outstandingly. That's only possible in football. To play this well and still lose. Luckily, there is a return leg for such games."
"There is a return leg and we will show that we were clearly better then and go through. We were clear through on goal and things didn't work out. Such days happen," said Thomas Tuchel.
