Lukaku Scores As United Beat City
Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford were on the score-sheet for Manchester United as they beat Manchester City 2-0 in the first Manchester Derby to be played overseas. A crowd of over 67,000 were present at the NRG Stadium to witness the game.
Paul Pogba found Lukaku with a pass that led to the goal in the 36th minute while Rashford finished from Jesse Lingard's assist a couple of minutes later.
Manchester City came close to reducing the deficit when Fernandinho's long range shot was saved by Sergio Romero. 17 year old Phil Foden who is a local lad was also making his first team debut and he impressed the Man City boss.
Mourinho however was quick to play down the result labelling it as 'a very good training session'.
"I'm really pleased," said Mourinho
"I'm sure Pep is the same. The most important thing was to give the players high quality training."
The Portuguese also singled out Romelu Lukaku out for praise
"He's a team player that holds the ball, waits for support and allows the team to leave pressure zones and to keep possession in the opposition half. People look to goals and chances but I have a different perspective.
I couldn't be happier with what he's doing. I couldn't be happier that we could sign him before the pre season because these ten days of work with his team-mates is fantastic for his understanding." Mourinho told MUTV.
Pep Guardiola himself was thrilled by the input made by 17 year old Phil Foden.
"I don't have words to describe what I saw, his performance was at another level. He loves the Club, He is a City fan. He is a gift" Guardiola said.
