Petr Cech Refused To Lift Arsenal's Pre-Season Trophy.. .He Had A Point
Arsenal was involved in a friendly game against their European nemesis Bayern Munich in China and after the game and a hard fought and indeed rare victory against Bayern Munich, the Gunners were understandably handed a trophy for their win.
The London Club required penalty kicks to overcome Bayern Munich after Alex Iwobi levelled the scores late on, Peter Cech was actually in the game but was already substituted when Arsenal got their equalizer, hence Emiliano Martinez was charged with saving the spot kicks for Arsenal which the Argentine managed to do aptly.
Martinez's heroics handed Arsenal the win, and from nowhere there was a post-match ceremony and a trophy presentation.
Peter Cech however made his many years of experience count and also put his winning mentality on show by not joining the Arsenal youngies in their extravagant celebrations. The former Chelsea goalkeeper refused to lift the trophy but rather urged the youngsters to save such celebrations for a real trophy at the end of the season.
"This is not the trophy we lift guys. This is not the trophy we lift. Let's lift the big one at the end of the season. Not this one!" Cech said as he admonished the young players. The youngsters however threw caution to the wind and snatched the trophy from the veteran keeper.
Cech however managed a smile as the squad celebrated the victory. Petr Cech won the Premier League title four times with Chelsea between 2005-2015, Arsenal themselves have not managed the title in that period.
