FIFA World Cup Is Set For An Expansion Of Teams

Fifa will vote today, Tuesday on Plans to expand the world cup to 48 teams from 2026.

While running for the President of Fifa  Gianni Infantino's campaign centered around increasing the number of teams from 32 to 48. The Fifa president has 'overwhelming' support to make the World Cup a 48 team affair with 16 groups of 3 where the top two proceeds to the knockout rounds being the favoured choice, but there are four other options.

The last time expansions were made in the number of World Cup participants was in 1998 when the teams were increased from 24 to 32.

Infantino is of the opinion that increasing the World Cup teams will benefit and develop football all over the world.

He said at a sports conference in Dubai in December "There is nothing bigger in terms of boosting football in a country than participating in a World Cup."

There are five options to be considered in the new World Cup formular.

1. A 48-team World Cup consisting of 16 groups of three, with the two top sides qualifying for the last-32 knockout stage (80 games in total).

2. Another 48-team version consisting of a 32-team, one-game knockout round, with the winners joining 16 already-qualified teams (80 games - 16 in preliminary and 64 in main tournament).

3. Expanding it to 40 teams, with 10 groups of four and only six group runners-up advancing (76 games).

4.A 40-team tournament with eight groups of five (88 games).

5.Keeping the world cup at its present size of 32 teams (64 games).
