The Saints Edge Liverpool In EFL Cup 1st Leg
It has been a week of sad cup adventures for Liverpool, after playing out a barren draw with Plymouth Argyle on Sunday and then losing 1-0 to Southampton at The Saint Mary's stadium on Wednesday night as the Saints took a narrow lead going into the second leg.
Nathan Redmond's 20th minute strike was enough to give Southampton the victory, but the hosts can count themselves unlucky for not sealing progression with a more emphatic scoreline. Liverpool had Loris Karius to thank for long spells a game where the outfield players disappointed.
Jurgen Klopp has placed great faith in his goalkeeper ever since his move from Mainz and after series of disappointment that faith seems to have started being repayed.
"We needed Loris Karius to save our lives two or three times.
"The best thing for us is this result. We know we can play better at Anfield, nothing is decided.
"We cannot be happy with the performance, Southampton cannot be happy with the result. It could and should have been 2-0,3-0. " Klopp said after the game.
