Former Manchester United boss Van Gaal has announced his retirement after 26 years as a manager in the beautiful game.
The Dutchman who also managed Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AZ Alkmaar made the announcement yesterday (Monday) after receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Dutch Government for his contributions to football.
He cited family issues for his decision. He told De Telegraaf that it was partly motivated by the sudden death of his daughter's husband last month.
Van Gaal revealed he turned down lucrative offers to move to the Far East. In 1995 Van Gaal won the UEFA Champions league with Ajax, three years earlier he had won the UEFA Cup with the same club, and most recently he won the FA Cup with Manchester United in May 2016.
