FIFA World Cup Teams Has Been Expanded
FIFA has voted the World Cup to be expanded to 48 teams , 16 teams more , up from the initial 32. The change will be effective from the mundial in 2026
An initial stage of 16 groups of three teams where the top two qualifies will be followed by a knockout stage for the remaining 32.
Football's governing body voted unanimously in Zurich today, Tuesday.
The change will see an increase in the number of games played from 64 to 80 but the eventual winners will still play seven games in total. The tournament will also still be completed in a period of 32 days, this is to pacify top European clubs whose players are involved in the competition.
According to FIFA president Gianni Infantino " This football promotion, in many parts of the world where today they have no chance to play [at the World Cup] was at the top of our thoughts."
The World Cup will be facing its first overhaul since 1998 when the changes become effective and according to research, the budget for the tournament will increase by about £521m.
